Description

Katakuchi Chawan

Originally intended for serving sake, katakuchi are now one of the most versatile forms in Japanese ceramics. While these katakuchi can be used for a variety of purposes (sake serving, cooling hot water for green tea preparation, whisking and serving sauces or vinaigrettes, etc,) they were designed to be used as high-volume matcha whisking vessels. The inward-sloping lip is meant to protect from splashes of matcha escaping during vigorous whisking sessions, and the base of the piece is left slightly heavier than usual to provide stability during use.

Fukushima Collection

The items from the Fukushima Collection were created in Fall 2025 at a studio in Minami-aizu, Fukushima. You can read more about the creation of these pieces here. The cups use a white clay from Gifu with some iron added in, and were fired to 1260c in a reduction atmosphere. This is a very strong clay that has been fired slightly beyond its normal range in order to vitrify and strengthen the vessel further for everyday use.
